ABOUT THE MEETING

The enthusiasm from the initial Podocyte meeting in 1999 continued and grew the next year, when it was held at the University of Michigan with about 70 people in attendance. The two-day "Symposium on Podocyte Biology 2000" kicked off with a welcome from Allen Lichter, the Dean of the University of Michigan Medical School. It was jointly hosted by the Nephrology and Pediatric Nephrology departments, along with Pathology involvement, reflecting a spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration that continues to this day.

The program included 22 speakers from nine countries, and talks covered a variety of emerging research: nephrin and the slit diaphragm, podocalyxin, developmental biology of the podocyte, the roles of integrin and podocin, predictive value of histological patterns in podocyte injury, and more. Martin Pollak and Corinne Antignac presented their discoveries of two familial FSGS genes affecting alpha-actinin 4 and podocin respectively.
