ABOUT THE MEETING
The 11th International Podocyte Conference was hosted in Haifa, Israel by Suheir Assady and Karl Skorecki, at the Rambam Health Care Campus of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. The conference kicked off with a special plenary lecture on "Scientific Discovery Against All Odds" delivered by Technion professor Dan Shechtman, the 2011 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry.
The 11 sessions of the next few days showcased discoveries ranging from cell signaling to diagnostics and therapeutics, along with several convivial "Meet the Professor" events for intergenerational exchange. There was also a satellite meeting in Jerusalem.
The Marilyn Farquhar Lifetime Research Achievement Award was presented to David Salant during a festive dinner at the impressive Knights Halls in Akko, a historic structure built by the Knights Hospitallers in the 12th century.
We are cognizant of the time and travel constraints under which fully engaged scientists and clinicians operate, and which limit availability to participate in highly specialized conferences.
Yet, despite the availability of webinars and other electronic means of interaction, we still feel that like the healthy glomerulus, so too healthy podocyte research requires the direct interaction of individual specialized components, enabled by such a meeting.
